The Australians’ future is hanging by a thin line at Tottenham.
Even though he could lead Tottenham Hotspur to their first title in 17 years in Wednesday’s UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao, manager Ange Postecoglou faces an unclear future.
Due to Tottenham’s dismal Premier League season, the Australian manager’s future is still up in the air, even if he is able to win European silverware.
Tottenham last won a major prize in 2008 after defeating Chelsea in the League Cup final; their last European victory was in the UEFA Cup in 1984.
Thomas Frank of Brentford, Oliver Glasner of Crystal Palace, and Marco Silva of Fulham are among the possible alternatives that chairman Daniel Levy is apparently contemplating.
George Graham, the 1999 League Cup winner, and Juande Ramos, the 2008 League Cup winner, were both fired soon after winning the trophies for Spurs.
Both coaches have left little of a legacy at the club, even if their victories are now considered historic because of how uncommon they are. That may suggest something.
Without some dysfunction, it seems impossible for Spurs to win. Naturally, as long as they simply win the trophy and rejoice as Crystal Palace did, the fans won’t give a damn.
Ange Postecoglou might not care all that much. Since he said, “I usually move on the back of success,” there is a growing fear that he may simply quit.
It’s obvious that Ange Postecoglou was brought in for the correct reasons. His coaching career was on the rise, and his progressive style of play appeared ideal for Tottenham, who were at last attempting to create something more ambitious.
They made reactive “big club appointments” for far too long, which wasn’t consistent with who they were. Antonio Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Jose Mourinho all demonstrated strong pragmatism, but it was ineffective.
However, Ange Postecoglou’s football hasn’t worked either, for the most part. Given that Spurs didn’t play in Europe while Aston Villa did, they really ought to have made it to the Champions League the previous season.
Form has never been nearly as strong as it was thought. Now, as the Premier League season has collapsed along with Postecoglou’s football, his future hangs over uncertainty.
