How can Mumbai Indians qualify for the playoffs?

Mumbai Indians have seven wins and 14 points from 12 games with NRR of +1.156.

Mumbai Indians (MI) won only one game in their first five matches of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. It seemed like MI would suffer the same fate as in IPL 2024, when they finished 10th. But under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, MI bounced back in style by winning their next six games.

On Sunday, May 18, the Delhi Capitals vs. Gujarat Titans and the Rajasthan Royals vs. Punjab Kings doubleheader games were crucial in determining eligibility for the playoffs. By winning their respective games, GT and PBKS guaranteed their places in the top four. Moreover, RCB advanced to the next round of the competition.

Mumbai Indians now have seven wins and 14 points from 12 games, with Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.156.

How can Mumbai Indians qualify for the Playoffs?

The only teams still vying for the last playoff slot are the fourth-placed MI and fifth-placed Delhi Capitals, with Lucknow Super Giants getting eliminated from the race after losing to SRH on May 19. Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Kolkata Knight Riders have all been eliminated.

Out of the two teams competing, the Hardik Pandya-led side is currently in the lead. MI have two games remaining. They will play DC in Mumbai on Wednesday, May 21, and then face PBKS in Jaipur on Monday, May 26.

Now with LSG eliminated from the race, the MI v DC match on May 21 becomes a whole lot crucial for both teams. MI would reach 18 points if they win both of their remaining games, guaranteeing a spot in the playoffs and maybe a top-two finish. Winning against DC alone could be enough to secure their spot in the playoffs.

A single defeat, though, would make things more difficult for them, particularly if it occurs against DC, who are their direct rivals for a playoffs berth. If MI lose to DC, both the teams will be left with one game each in the league stage with MI on 14 and DC on 15 points. If MI lose to DC, they would not only need to win against PBKS in their last league match, but also hope that PBKS defeat DC in their encounter in order to make it to the playoffs.

If MI lose both of their remaining games, they will be eliminated from the IPL 2025 playoffs race.
