“We have to be here and win the trophy next year”- Shreyas Iyer drops colossal statement after losing to RCB in the final

Shreyas Iyer-led PBKS faltered by six runs in the final of IPL 2025 against RCB.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) skipper Shreyas Iyer opened up about the loss in the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He was dejected but didn’t shy away from giving credit to the support staff and the youngsters in the team for their performance.

Skipper Shreyas Iyer didn’t have a fairytale ending as PBKS suffered a disappointing loss by six runs against RCB in the final of IPL 2025. The match between the two teams took place at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday (3rd June).

Shreyas Iyer won the toss and put RCB into bat first. They had a decent outing with the ball as they restricted RCB to 190 runs, and with the way the pitch was playing, it seemed that they would chase the target and end their title drought of 18 long years.

But that wasn’t the case as the young guns of the PBKS succumbed to pressure. Even skipper Shreyas Iyer failed as RCB was all over the opposition. Josh Inglis (39) and Shashank (61*) tried to keep their team in the hunt. However, the bowlers were too good, as they restricted PBKS to 184, allowing RCB to win the game by six runs.

Talking about the loss, skipper Shreyas Iyer admitted that it was a par score and credited RCB bowlers for their magnificent outing. The captain also praised the young guns of the team and said:

“Dejected to be honest but the way our boys came up to the occasion, it wasn’t meant to be but lot of credit goes to the support staff, the owners and everyone else who’s participated in this. Considering the last game, I personally felt that 200 was a par score.”

“They bowled brilliantly, especially Krunal, he carries a lot of experience. I believe that was the turning point. I am very proud of each and every individual who has participated in this team. There are a lot of youngsters who are playing their first season, they’ve shown a lot of fearlessness.”

Hopefully we can be here next season and play some good cricket – Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer added that they will be winning the next year. He added:

“We wouldn’t be here without them, kudos to them. We have to be here and win the trophy next year. The way we turned up to each and with a belief of saying we can win this game. Hopefully we can be here next season and play some good cricket.”

Shreyas Iyer ended IPL 2025 as the leading run-getter for PBKS. He slammed 604 runs in 17 games at an average of 50. He also slammed six fifties with the best of an unbeaten 97.
