BCCI changed the venue of the playoffs from Kolkata to Ahmedabad due to the rainy season in West Bengal.
Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are facing off each other in Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The match between the two teams is taking place at the Narendra Modi International Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (1st June).
On what was an overcast day, PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer won the toss and opted to field first. However, in a head-scratching thing, not even a single ball has been possible due to the rain at the time of writing this piece.
With no rain at the toss, it was expected that the PBKS vs MI clash would be played without any interruptions. However, the rain gods haven’t been kind, as whenever there has been a hope for the game, the covers have been called again to cover the pitch.
Interestingly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) changed the venue of the playoffs from Kolkata to Ahmedabad. This was because the governing body felt that rainy weather in West Bengal might hamper the games. But now, a similar fate has unfolded here in Ahmedabad as well.
Fans on Twitter react as BCCI’s move to shift playoffs to Ahmedabad backfires
This has made fans angry, and they didn’t shy away from lashing out at the BCCI for spoiling the Qualifier 2. Here are some of the reactions:
The winner of the PBKS vs MI clash will be facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final of IPL 2025. The match will be taking place at the same venue on Tuesday (3rd June). The BCCI also hasn’t kept a reserve day for Qualifier 2, and it also saw them facing a lot of criticism.
However, even if there is a washout due to rain, we will have our finalists. The finalist will be decided based on the position on the league stage points table, and in this case, PBKS will advance to the finals as they ended the league stage in the first spot, while MI finished in fourth.
PBKS are entering the clash on the back of the thumping eight-wicket loss against RCB in the Qualifier 1. On the other hand, MI beat Gujarat Titans by 20 runs in the Eliminator and would be high on confidence.
