Steve Smith suffered an injury while attempting a catch at slips during ICC WTC 2023-25 final.
The Australia Cricket Team and the South Africa Cricket Team are locking horns in the thrilling ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. The encounter began on June 11, and the game looks evenly poised with both teams having an equal chance to claim a victory.
During the second session of day three, Steve Smith suffered a severe finger injury. The right-handed batsman attempted to take Temba Bavuma’s catch off Mitchell Starc’s delivery at first slip. However, he dropped it, and the ball hit his little finger.
Bavuma managed to save his wicket, but Smith was forced to leave the field immediately with the team physios for treatment. The incident occurred ahead of the tea in the 20th over. Smith was immediately taken to the hospital for scans.

Cricket Australia (CA) revealed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that Smith has faced a compound dislocation of his right little finger. Notably, the commentators also mentioned that the veteran player might have dislocated his finger following the incident.
The right-handed batsman scored a crucial half-century in the first innings, scoring 66 runs to power the scoreboard to 212/10 in the first innings. Beau Webster was another Australian batter who slammed a fifty. Smith got out for 13 runs in the second innings. South Africa have a target of 282 runs in the ongoing ICC WTC 2023-25 final.
Smith’s finger injury will come as a big blow for Australia, who are scheduled to tour the West Indies for a test and T20I series this month. The Pat Cummins & Co. will face the West Indies in three tests during the tour, which will commence with the opening game on June 25 at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
Smith was expected to be named in the Australian squad for the test series, however, it looks like they will need to replace him following his critical finger injury. The series will be Australia’s first campaign in the ICC WTC 2025-27 cycle.
