Luka Modric, the captain of Real Madrid, has announced that he will depart the Spanish powerhouse following the conclusion of their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.
When Real Madrid host Real Sociedad on Saturday in their final LaLiga encounter of the season, the 39-year-old Croatian midfielder, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, will play his final game at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Since moving from Spurs to Real Madrid in 2012, he has collected 28 trophies, namely six UEFA Champions Leagues and four domestic titles.
On June 18, Madrid will play Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal in the opening match of the Club World Cup. In the group stage, they will also play Mexico’s Pachuca and Austria’s RB Salzburg.
“The moment has arrived. The moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end,” Modric said on Instagram.
“I arrived in 2012 with the hope of wearing the jersey of the best team in the world and the ambition to do great things, but I couldn’t have imagined what came next,” he said.
“Playing for Real Madrid changed my life as a footballer and as a person. I’m proud to have been part of one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.”
Modric will depart Real Madrid as its most recognised player with 590 games, 43 goals, and 95 assists, despite the fact that he has mostly played as a substitute this season.
After guiding Real Madrid to the Club World Cup final and a Champions League victory over Liverpool in 2018, Modric became the first player since 2007 to be awarded the Ballon d’Or, aside from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
