John Cena might go back to his old roots even after turning heel.
John Cena lived by the principles of ‘Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ for more than two decades as a WWE superstar. However, he shocked the world at Elimination Chamber 2025 by committing an act fans never thought they would witness.
Cena took the signal from ‘The Final Boss’, The Rock, and nailed Cody Rhodes in the groin to turn heel for the first time in his prime. Since that night, ‘The Cenation Leader’ has been laying wreckage on the entire WWE landscape during his farewell tour.
He has laid out his intentions to ruin wrestling before his retirement and now has the Undisputed WWE Championship firmly in his grasp. Despite all of his actions, recent weeks have shown signs that Cena might return to his roots before it is all set and done.
Has John Cena been displaying signs of a face turn?
John Cena is on the final leg of his illustrious career as an in-ring WWE superstar. However, it has been evident that Cena is no longer in his prime, and he himself admitted that he has slowed down in recent years. Moreover, fans have heckled Cena for years, and all those things might have contributed to his heel turn.
One of the most villainous actions he did was utilizing underhanded tactics at WrestleMania 41 to defeat Cody Rhodes and win his record-shattering 17th WWE Championship. However, since that night, there have been a few instances that the Unseen 17 has been displaying signs of reverting back to a baby face superstar.
The first time was right after his last-ever showdown with his iconic rival, Randy Orton, at the 2025 WWE Backlash PLE. Although he again stepped low to retain his title, John Cena was visibly emotional after the match. His realisation about competing against Orton one final time and the fans applauding their match moved him to tears.
Right after the show, the Face that Runs the Place appeared at the Backlash media conference. Before he dropped R-Truth with an AA on the table, he showed empathy and respect to the man who calls him his ‘childhood hero.’ This set up their match at WWE’s special show, Saturday Night’s Main Event, on May 24.
Despite his ruthless aggression being in full force, there was a moment in their match when John Cena became hesitant to take down Truth with the championship belt, although it lasted only for a moment.
Furthermore, there is a possibility of more such instances on his farewell tour, which could lead to him turning into a good guy again and embracing the WWE Universe with his beloved Superhero persona and respect for them.
