Italy announce squad for U21 European Championship; Cesare Casadei called up


Gli Azzurri are in Group A of the Euro U-21 competition.

Cesare Casadei and Diego Coppola are among the 23-man Italy squad that has been called up to compete at the European Under-21 Championship. However, Francesco Pio Esposito was left out as he is sidelined due to injury. The competition will take place in Slovakia from June 11 to June 28.

Gli Azzurri, who are in Group A, will play their first match against Romania on June 11 before playing the hosts, Slovakia, on June 14. On June 17, they will play Spain in the group phase’s last match. The quarterfinals, which take place on June 21 and 22, will feature the top two teams from each group.

Francesco Pio Esposito of Spezia was called up by coach Carmine Nunziata, but he won’t be available because of an injury.

Giovanni Bonfanti, a defender for Pisa, and Cristian Volpato, a midfielder for Sassuolo, were also removed from the lengthy squad.

After June 10, Casadei, a midfielder for Torino, and Diego Coppola, a defender for Verona, will join the U21 team. They are presently with the main Italy squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Norway.

Italy will start their Euro U-21 competition on 11th June. They are currently in Group A alongside Romania, Slovakia and Spain.
