New Zealand appoint Rob Walter as Head Coach across all formats

Rob Walter succeeds Gary Stead as the new head coach of New Zealand.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC), on Friday, June 6, appointed Rob Walter as the new head coach of the men’s national team across all three formats. Walter has been handed a three-year contract as the New Zealand Cricket Team’s head coach.

Walter is the former white-ball coach of South Africa Cricket Team. He resigned as South Africa coach in April due to personal reasons. Interestingly, he had a four-year contract with South Africa, but he ended his contract midway.

Walter had an impressive stint with South Africa Cricket Team. He led Proteas to the semi-final of ICC ODI World Cup 2023, final of ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and semi-final of ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After he stepped down from the role, South Africa appointed test coach Shukri Conrad as the all-format coach.

Just can’t wait to get started: Rob Walter after becoming New Zealand new head coach

Following his appointment, Walter said he is excited for his new stint with the New Zealand Cricket Team and looks forward to getting started. Walter will take over the duties from mid-June.

“The Blackcaps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now and it’s a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that. I just can’t wait to get started. It’s exciting, it’s challenging, and the opportunity is enormous for everyone,” the 49-year-old said.

“It’s an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested”, he added.

During this three-year contract, Walter will coach the BlackCaps in the next ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, T20I World Cups in 2026 and 2028, ODI World Cup in 2027, and also the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

His first campaign is the forthcoming T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe. New Zealand will tour Zimbabwe for a T20I tri-series, which will be played between Zimbabwe, New Zealand and South Africa.
