Arne Slot led Liverpool to English league glory in his maiden season.
The 2024-25 season of the English Premier League saw a lot of unpredictable and unexpected things happening. Arne Slot’s Liverpool ended Manchester City’s dominance in the English top flight. A rare trophyless season for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.
Newcastle United and Crystal Palace will represent England in Europe next season after winning the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, respectively. A mid-table team like Nottingham Forest is giving tough competition for a spot in the UEFA Champions League. Three English sides made it to the finals of Europe’s top 3 club competitions.
Two of the top six teams are just sitting above the relegation zone, but they simultaneously made it to the finals of the UEFA Europa League as well.
In this feature article, we shall delve deep to find out the best combination of players who made it to our PL Team of the Season.
Premier League 2024-25 Team of the Season (Formation: 4-3-3)
GK – Matz Sels (Nottingham Forest)
The 33-year-old Belgian custodian from Lint has secured the joint highest clean sheets this season. He played a crucial role in turning a mid-table team like Nottingham Forest into one of the most powerful teams in the competition. His quick reflexes and acrobatics between the sticks saw Nottingham turning defeats into draws.
He has made a total of 119 saves this Premier League season and has featured in every single game for Nuno Espirito Santos’ side.
RB – Daniel Munoz (Crystal Palace)
Daniel Munoz, who led Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory this year, signed a contract extension with the Eagles until 2028. The Colombian wing-back has made 36 appearances for Crystal Palace. He has scored four goals and contributed five assists this season.
His overlapping runs, coupled with his ability to press forward, make him an indispensable component in Oliver Glasner’s setup. He brought immense joy and happiness to Selhurst Park and will look forward to excelling in the Europa League next year with the South London outfit.
CB – Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)
When Jurgen Klopp left Anfield, there was a big uncertainty about the future of Liverpool and how it would fare under Arne Slot. The Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk led his team from the front to help them become the Champions of England after a wait of four long years.
Liverpool conceded only 37 goals in 37 games. Van Dijk was the primary reason behind this defensive dominance. He marshalled his team’s backline and established an impregnable defence that was nothing less than a nightmare for opposition teams.
CB – Nikola Milenkovic (Nottingham)
Nikola Milenkovic was a defensive stalwart for Forest this season. The Serbian played every game for Nottingham and was crucial in keeping 13 clean sheets. Apart from offering defensive stability, Milenovic was a lethal force during counterattacks and set pieces.
He scored five goals and two assists as well for Forest. He will be hoping to put in his best in the remaining two games to secure a continental spot for the upcoming season.
LB – Marc Cucurella (Chelsea)
Marc Cucurella is enjoying a fantastic Premier League season with Chelsea so far. After winning the UEFA Euros with Spain this year, he is now inching closer to another trophy in less than 12 months after Chelsea made it to the finals of the UEFA Conference League.
He has featured in 35 games for the Blues and scored five goals as well. He has emerged as a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge and quickly got accustomed to Enzo Maresca’s tactical setup.
RM – Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool)
The Dutch midfielder was pivotal in helping Liverpool win the midfield battles against different teams. He has featured in every single game for Liverpool under the tutelage of his compatriot and gaffer, Arne Slot. He made four goal contributions this season.
He was very effective during transition play and offered an extra layer of defensive stability to the Reds this season. He also won 26 aerial battles and neutralised many threats from the air.
CM – Sandro Tonali (Newcastle)
Sandro Tonali emerged as a cornerstone player for Newcastle United this year. He has made 35 appearances for the Magpies and scored four goals as well. He brought a lot of joy and happiness to St. James Park after winning the Carabao Cup against Liverpool.
With his side already making it to the Carabao Cup, he will now be looking forward to playing a crucial role in helping Newcastle make it to the Top Five and directly qualify for the UCL.
LM – Declan Rice (Arsenal)
After a terrific performance this season, both domestically as well in Europe, Declan Rice would be gutted after yet another trophyless season for the Gunners. They crashed out of the UCL semi-finals and also ranked second for the third consecutive time in the English top flight.
He played 34 games for the North London outfit and scored four goals for the Gunners. Despite another “too close yet too far” season for Mikel Arteta, he was one of the best players this season.
RW – Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)
After Arne Slot took over, there were a lot of uncertainties revolving around Salah’s future at Anfield. He chose to shut down his critics with his performance as he emerged as the Golden Boot winner this season after scoring 28 goals for the Reds.
The Egyptian maestro also contributed 18 assists and was a nightmare for opposition defenders. Salah has time and again proved himself to be one of the greatest players to ever feature in the English top flight.
CF – Alexander Isak (Newcastle)
The second-highest goalscorer of this competition, Alexander Isak from Newcastle, had a season worth cherishing for a lifetime. Not only did he score 23 goals, but he also scored the second goal against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup finals to lead the Magpies to glory.
Amidst headlines of the Swedish striker heading to Emirates, he has given some of the most cherished memories for the Newcastle fans at St. James Park.
LW – Matheus Cunha (Wolves)
It is not usual to see a player scoring 15 goals in a season and find his team out of the top 10, nor win any domestic trophy. Such has been the impact of Matheus Cunha for Wolverhampton Wanderers this season. There have been rumours that Manchester United are keen to sign the Brazilian striker.
The Brazilian striker has been leading the Wolves’ attack for the last four seasons and has been pretty impressive. Despite Wolves struggling to perform, Cunha has consistently delivered for the team.
