WWE SmackDown Summary and Highlights

R-Truth attacks John Cena

John Cena stepped into the ring and picked up the mic, stating that the wrestling Mount Rushmore was just ‘John Cena and only John Cena’, while there had been greats, but no one in the past, present, or future was comparable to him. Cena stated that everybody wanted to be like him, as he was always a thousand steps ahead.

He announced that his retirement had been planned, allowing him to plan for his opponents. The Champion revealed his plans leading to WrestleMania 41, the Royal Rumble, and the Elimination Chamber, followed by Backlash and SNME. Cena then stated he had formed an alliance with Logan Paul while the crowd was busy bringing back R-Truth.

Cena then revealed how he had pushed CM Punk into a corner by exposing his hypocrisy. He also stated that Seth Rollins would never cash in on him. The Champion stated that he won matches before they even started, and the crowd would never appreciate how good he was until three years after he was gone.

Cena flaunted the title, stating that there would be no one worthy enough to hold the title again. Cody Rhodes‘ music hit, and the American Nightmare made his way into the ring, coming face to face with Cena. He picked up the mic as “Cody” chants echoed in the arena, asking what Cena had said about being smart and a thousand steps ahead.

Rhodes called Cena a genius and accepted that whatever he had said had come to fruition. But there was a parallel Cena hadn’t accounted for, which was last Saturday when he pinned Cena in the center of the ring. Cody stated that he wasn’t part of Cena’s plan, but it was the other way around. Rhodes asked, “Where does this lead then?” Randy Orton’s music then blasted in the arena as the Viper returned.

Orton stated that he had been close to pinning Cena until somebody decided to come and save the day. He now realized he would have to do whatever it took to get to number 15. Randy stated that he loved Cody like a brother, but to get to Cena, he wouldn’t hesitate. LA Knight’s music hit, and the megastar arrived. Knight stated that he was looking at the WWE establishment, and he was the sore thumb.

He said Cena’s plan likely hadn’t included him, but he would win the King of the Ring tournament and then become the WWE Champion, with everybody saying, “LA Knight, yeah.” Cena threw the mic and left the ring as R-Truth (Ron Killings) appeared through the entrance ramp, ambushing Cena. Security and officials rushed in to separate the two.

Randy Orton vs LA Knight vs Carmelo Hayes vs Aleister Black – KOTR Tournament match

Randy Orton, LA Knight, Carmelo Hayes and Aleister Black locked horns in the first match of the evening to battle for the semi-final spot against Sami Zayn in the King of the Ring tournament. The four stars put on an amazing battle, but in the end, as Knight looked to land the final blow, Bronson Reed appeared, attacking Knight.

Shortly after, Bron Breakker appeared, taking out Knight with a vicious spear. Hayes tried to capitalize and went for the splash, but Orton was right there to deliver a mid-air RKO. Orton picked up a win to advance in the semi-finals.

Jacob Fatu – Solo Sikoa

The US Champion was in the ring as he picked up the mic. “Fatu” chants erupted, and Jacob acknowledged the fans in Lexington before stating that just because you’re family, it didn’t mean you could sneak behind his back or take all the credit.

Fatu went off on Solo Sikoa, stating that he had to remind him at Money in the Bank, and now it was just him against the world. Solo interrupted the promo via satellite, stating that he was ready to forgive Jacob, reminding him how he had brought him there and made him a superstar.

Sikoa revealed that he would arrive next week with open arms in the ring, and he needed to hear four words from him: “I Love You Solo.” Solo ended the segment, sending a warning that he was the one who brought him in and would be the one to take him out!

The Secret Service (Piper Niven & Alba Fyre) was backstage in General Manager Nick Aldis’ office as Niven handed him the phone, where Chelsea Green was on FaceTime.

Green asked Aldis to postpone the Queen of the Ring match involving her that night, but GM Aldis shut down the idea, stating that Alba Fyre would replace Chelsea in the match. Green tried to protest, but Aldis asked Fyre to get into her wrestling gear, as she would replace Green in the match.

Women’s United States Champion Zelina Vega came in, asking for Giulia. Aldis informed her that Giulia wasn’t there. Vega stated that she was the Champion and didn’t need to pretend or hide, and that she would catch up with her next week.

Jade Cargill vs Michin vs Nia Jax vs Piper Niven – QOTR Tournament match

Jade Cargill, Michin, Nia Jax, and Piper Niven locked horns in the first Queen of the Ring tournament match to secure a spot in the semi-finals. While Jax and Niven formed an alliance to batter Cargill and Michin, it soon fell flat as Cargill fought back, delivering jaded on Niven to pick up the win and secure her spot in the semi-finals.

Nia Jax attacks Tiffany Stratton

Naomi went off on the crowd, stating that she told everyone and took what she deserved. Now, she was the Miss Money in the Bank. Naomi reminded everyone how the current Women’s Champion, Tiffany Stratton, had been there to interfere whenever she tried to beat Nia Jax for the title. Now, Naomi was ready to clock Tiffany with the briefcase to become the…, just then Tiffany Stratton appeared

Stratton stated that Naomi talked a big game and floated the idea of cashing in the contract right then. Tiffany said that Naomi was just the old Naomi, all talk! The Champion asked her to prove everyone wrong, but Naomi fired back, stating that she would cash in when Tiffany least expected it. Naomi sent a warning to Stratton to “Proceed with caution.”

Naomi left laughing like a maniac, while Stratton flaunted the title. Nia Jax then appeared to attack the Champion, who fought back, taking her down, as Naomi stepped onto the apron. Stratton pushed her off, but Jax capitalized, taking her down to deliver the Annihilator ringside. Naomi then stepped in with the briefcase, but Jax confronted her and ordered her to get out. Naomi wisely stepped away.

General Manager Nick Aldis was backstage with the Tag Team division, trying to find a solution to the Wyatt Sicks problem. DIY floated the idea of Fraxiom battling the Sicks, and if they weren’t willing, it could be the Tag Champions, the Street Profits. Aldis interrupted and asked DIY to let him finish.

Aldis then asked the Motor City Machine Guns to set the tone and announced that they would battle the Wyatt Sicks on the show.

John Cena was backstage when he ran into Jimmy Uso. Cena asked if he had seen R-Truth or Ron Killings. Jimmy stated that he hadn’t seen either of them. Cena said that he knew they were close and informed Big Jim that he was going to the ring. He then asked Jimmy to inform Killings of the same.

CM Punk confronts John Cena

John Cena made his way into the ring, and the Champion looked furious. Cena went off, calling out R-Truth, stating that he had crossed some lines. “We Want Truth” chants erupted, and Cena said that for once, he agreed with the crowd. He called out Truth again, but it was CM Punk who came out, and the Lexington crowd erupted.

Punk stepped into the ring and climbed the ropes to rally up the crowd, while Cena looked irked by his presence. Punk stated that not Cena, but the fans were tired of being disrespected. The Second City Saint gave Cena a chance to stop what he was doing and let the fans celebrate who he was.

He told Cena to let them celebrate the sacrifices he had made for the business and to give the fans a happy ending. “CM Punk” chants filled the arena as Cena asked, “Why?” He wondered why he would waste his time, saying that these people didn’t matter to him, and the only thing that mattered to him was the title.

Cena blasted the crowd, but Punk calmed him down, stating that he and Lexington had given him a chance. He then said that it was about to get real. Punk stated that while Cena called him a hypocrite, he would take it upon himself to save wrestling.

The Second City Saint continued to respond to Cena’s accusation while roasting him for his appearance, calling him a toddler. He stated that while he sounded like PG Era John Cena, Cena sounded like CM Punk. Punk reminded Cena that he won the title and walked away, saying that Cena was copying him. He added that he would follow Cena to Mars, to hell, to prove he was better than him.

Punk stated that while Cena was the GOAT, so was he. He reminded Cena that he had defeated him in his hometown and in Cena’s hometown as well. Punk continued to drop truth bombs, saying that he saw through Cena and always had.

The Second City Saint then stepped out of the ring and flaunted, as Ron Killings appeared from behind, attacking Cena and locking in the STF. Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss kicked off the match with visible tension as Bliss interrupted Flair’s entrance. Similar to Piper Niven, Fyre also formed an alliance with LeRae in the beginning, but in the final moments of the match, Fyre came in with a superkick but ate a big boot as Flair locked in the Figure Eight.

Just then, Bliss delivered Sister Abigail on LeRae beside Flair and Fyre, and Bliss made the pin on Candice to secure her spot in the semi-finals. What was even more irking for Flair was that Alba Fyre tapped out right after the pinfall win.
