Shubman Gill will be the India’s 37th test captain when he walks for the toss in the Leeds match.
Kuldeep Yadav has backed new India test captain Shubman Gill, saying that the latter is ready to lead the Indian team into a new era. Kuldeep has so far played only one test match in England, which took place at the Lord’s in 2018. In England’s lone innings, he failed to take a wicket and gave up 44 runs in nine overs.
Since then, however, he has developed into a more well-rounded bowler. Kuldeep has so far played 13 tests and taken 56 wickets at an average of 2216 and strike rate of 37.3.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has taken over as India’s test captain after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format in May, followed by Virat Kohli’s announcement. He will be the 37th Indian test captain when he walks out for the toss in the first test at Leeds.
“Shubman knows how to lead a team” – Kuldeep Yadav
India have given Shubman Gill the test leadership following Rohit’s retirement. Gill is “fully ready to lead” the team, according to Kuldeep.
“Shubman knows how to lead a team. He has worked under the seniors in the last couple of years. In the last year, you’d have seen him in a lot of discussions with Rohit bhai—not only in Tests but even in ODIs. I’m sure he has learned a lot, but as a leader, from what I have seen so far, he’s very motivated and has been playing an active role in lifting the team.
I have seen over the last three to four sessions that Shubman has the same qualities that I’ve seen in our previous leadership groups. He’s fully ready to lead us,” Kuldeep Yadav was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
In early 2024, India overcame a 0-1 deficit to defeat England 4-1 at home, thanks in large part to Kuldeep’s left-arm wrist spin, with 19 wickets at an average of 20.15 in four test matches.
