Aryna Sabalenka is seeded first at the French Open 2025.
The French Open 2025 has started, and much like every year, fans and stars are full of enthusiasm. However, it’s the first edition of Roland Garros after Rafael Nadal’s retirement. Also, for the first time since 2021, Iga Swiatek is not seeded first in the tournament.
The defending champion is seeded fifth, behind Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Jasmine Paolini. Questions have also been raised about Iga Swiatek’s form, as she has failed to win any titles this year. Nevertheless, on clay, miracles have taken place.
On the same note, let’s take a look at the top five favourites to win the women’s singles title at the French Open 2025.
5. Mirra Andreeva
Sixth seed Mirra Andreeva is one of the favourites to win the 2025 French Open. She reached the quarter-finals in Madrid and Rome, where she lost to Coco Gauff at both junctures. However, her most prestigious performance came at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she defeated Clara Tauson in the final to win her first 1000 title.
In the very next tournament, she beat Aryna Sabalenka in the final to claim the Indian Wells Masters. She has yet to display her ability on clay, but the French Open is the perfect opportunity for that, too.
4. Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff’s pursuit of the clay Grand Slam might come to an end at the 2025 French Open. She made it to the semi-finals last year before she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets. This year, she’s seeded second and can face two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejčíková in the fourth round.
The American tennis star is yet to win a title this season, and she has a win/loss record of 24/8. However, his performances in the Madrid Open and the Rome Masters would help her gain confidence ahead of the clay Grand Slam.
3. Aryna Sabalenka
World No. #1 Aryna Sabalenka started the season with a disappointing loss in the Australian Open final to Madison Keys. Since then, she has played four finals, winning two. She enjoyed an interesting time on the tour, beating Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula but also losing to Mirra Andreeva and Jelena Ostapenko.
However, she would be required to use the remaining gas to win her first Roland Garros. The top seed has won 34 matches this season, losing only six. As the top seed privilege, the Belarusian tennis star would enjoy a relatively easier route to the final.
2. Jasmine Paolini
Paolini’s rise into the top ranks has been memorable. After beating Coco Gauff last week, she became the first Italian woman to win the Rome Masters in four decades. She was also the first Italian woman to reach the final of the WTA 1000 event after Sara Errani in 2014.
Jasmine Paolini was seeded 12th at Roland Garros last year, and her rank has improved drastically, as she’s one of the top favourites for this year’s title.
She lost to Iga Swiatek in the summit clash, but the Polish superstar has also failed to perform consistently on the tour lately. Nevertheless, Paolini’s win over second seed Coco Gauff will also help her with confidence on the Parisian clay. The fourth seed can potentially face Ukraine’s four-time French Open quarter-finalist Elina Svitolina in the fourth round.
1. Iga Swiatek
Defending champion Iga Swiatek is seeded fifth at the 2025 French Open; however, she can never be ruled out for the title challenge when it comes to the Parisian clay. The Polish tennis star is a four-time French Open champion and knows how to handle the heat and stress. She exhibited her elite mentality during her match against Naomi Osaka last summer at the same venue.
Her form in 2025 has been daunting, and she has failed to win a title this season with a win-loss record of 27/9. Additionally, she has a relatively difficult draw, as she might encounter Emma Raducanu and Sara Bejlek in the second and third rounds. Adding to the difficulty, she’s likely to face Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round.
Ostapenko holds an untouched 6-0 unbeaten record against the six-time Grand Slam champion in head-to-head. Thus, Iga Swiatek’s test will start from the first round, and if she defends her title, it would be one of the best triumphs at Roland Garros.
