Alexander Zverev and Iga Swiatek return as the defending champions in Rome.

The Italian Open 2025 is the final WTA 1000/ATP 1000 clay-court event in Europe ahead of the French Open. The event hosted by Rome was first played as an ATP event at its current home, the Foro Italico in 1968 before opening its doors to players from the WTA in 1976.

Raffaella Reggi (1985) was the last Italian woman to win the women’s singles event. The wait for a homegrown men’s singles champion goes back even further to 1976, the year Adriano Panatta took home the trophy.

The return of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as the top two seeds will shake things up at the event.

Current World No #1 and Italy’s Sinner will return after a three-month absence to his home event. Sinner has not made much of an impact in Rome, with his best result being the quarter-final appearance in 2022.

Alcaraz withdrew from the Madrid Open with a hamstring injury and will return to action this week. The Spaniard will be making just his second visit to Rome for the ATP 1000 event. Adding to the uncertainty is the erratic form of the defending champions Alexander Zverev and Iga Swiatek.

Zverev made a fourth-round exit at the Madrid Open soon after his title run at home in Munich. Swiatek has a string of semi-final appearances but has fallen short of converting them into a title run this far in 2025. Her most recent loss to Coco Gauff in the Madrid Open semi-finals signifies a worrying loss of form for the Pole.

Expect the momentum to be in favour of Casper Ruud and Jack Draper among the men and Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff among the women. Ruud-Draper were the finalists of the men’s singles draw at the recently concluded ATP 1000 Madrid Open, with Ruud claiming his maiden win.

Likewise, Sabalenka-Gauff made the title round in the women’s singles draw at Madrid, with Sabalenka emerging victorious to bag her third Madrid Open WTA 1000 title.
