Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will look to continue the Spanish dominance at Roland Garros.

The arrival of French Open 2025 and the first day’s play will mark a milestone, for it is the first French Open since Rafael Nadal’s retirement. Compatriot Carlos Alcaraz has comfortably slipped into Nadal’s shoes as the Spanish spearhead.

Roland Garros 2025 will also see a significant number of players across the ATP and WTA make their singles main draw debut at the clay-court major.

Among the men are two Frenchmen, Kyrian Jacquet and Clément Tabur, who have made it past the qualifying rounds for the first time. Lebanese player Benjamin Hassan survived the qualifying rounds to become the first man from his country to play in the French Open main draw.

One of the highlights of the main draw will be another debutant – Joao Fonseca. The 18-year-old Brazilian, who is ranked World No #65, has had a breakthrough year, winning his maiden title in Buenos Aires in February.

Filipina Alexandra Eala and Canadian Victoria Mboko are making their WTA main draw debut in Paris. Eala delivered a noteworthy semi-final run in Miami, taking down three Grand Slam champions—Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek. She also stretched Jessica Pegula to three sets in the last four.

Mboko, who made her WTA debut in 2022, won ITF trophies in the Caribbean, England and Portugal. The Canadian made the second round at WTA 1000 events in Miami and Rome. At both venues, she lost to Top 15 players Paula Badosa and Coco Gauff in hard-fought three-setters, proving she could go toe-to-toe with the big names. She is fresh off making her first WTA final at the Parma Ladies Open earlier this month.

Not to be forgotten are the familiar names as Roland Garros rolls out the red carpet for defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek.

Alcaraz won the Italian Open for the first time with a straight-set win over Italy’s Jannik Sinner. He will aim to add a tour-leading fourth title this season as well as a fourth Grand Slam title in the French capital. The return of Sinner may level the playing field, but it is Alcaraz who has the edge on the red clay courts of Paris. The Spaniard is seeded second in France, leaving wide open the possibility of another title-round clash against Sinner in less than a month.

Novak Djokovic will also be seen in action and is drawn to face Sinner in the semi-finals. Djokovic, with three French Open crowns, will be looking to win a fourth title in Paris and attain the magic number of 25 Grand Slams. The Serbian could run into 2021 Roland Garros quarter-finalist Daniil Medvedev in round four and last year’s finalist Alexander Zverev in the last eight.

With Swiatek seeded sixth and looking vulnerable, her pursuit of a fourth straight French Open title could unravel in this edition. The Pole’s path to the final may include a face-off with her nemesis, Jelena Ostapenko, in the fourth round. Italian Open champion Jasmine Paolini and World No #1 Aryna Sabalenka are potential rivals in the subsequent rounds.

Gauff, a Roland Garros finalist in 2022 and semi-finalist last season, is also a heavy-hitter in Paris with a 20-5 record at the venue. The American finished as runner-up at the recently concluded Italian Open. Qinwen Zheng’s semi-final appearance in Rome signifies a return to form for the Chinese player. She defeated top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the last eight before losing to Gauff in the semi-finals.
