Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have already retired from T20Is and tests.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two Indian veterans, may no longer be seen wearing the India whites; it is unclear when they will retire from playing ODIs. Only last month, halfway through the IPL 2025, did the two declare their retirements from the longest format of the game, having called their time from Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) after winning the ICC T20 World Cup in the Caribbean in 2024.
Cricket Australia (CA) is considering how to properly bid farewell to the two mainstays of the Indian Cricket Team when India visits Australia for the ODI series later this year. This action by CA, however, coincides with rumours that the two veteran hitters may retire from international competition following the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
“We give them a great send-off”- CA CEO on farewell to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
Many think that following the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027, Rohit and Virat may decide to retire from international cricket. This tour of Australia would be an appropriate farewell if that were to occur.
Given that nothing is known about the pair’s future in international cricket and that the current Australia trip may be their final one, Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said in a virtual interview with IANS that they would like to provide a “great send-off.”
“This might be the last time that we get to see Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma play in our country. And if that is the case, who knows, it might not be, but if it is, we wanna make sure we give them a great send-off and a reflection of the incredible contribution they’ve made to international cricket,” Todd Greenberg said as per IANS.
Although Rohit and Kohli are anticipated to play against Bangladesh, their involvement is still somewhat up in the air. Both have stated their intention to play until the ODI World Cup in 2027. In a recent interview, Rohit expressed his desire to continue playing until then, and Kohli, who has an outstanding ODI average of 57.9, is anticipated to follow suit.
It will be difficult for Rohit to stay healthy and in shape by the 2027 World Cup because he will be 40 and Kohli will be 38.
