Project Orion is in development
The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, codenamed Project Orion, is shaping up to be an ambitious project by CD Projekt RED.
According to the latest reports, a new city inspired by a “Chicago gone wrong” is creating a lot of hype among the fans.
Mike Pondsmith, the original developer of the Cyberpunk universe, just revealed intriguing facts about this new setting, fueling anticipation for what comes next.
A new Chicago-like City in Project Orion
Pondsmith said in an interview with TVGRY at the Digital Dragons 2025 event, which was covered by Polish site CD-Action, that Project Orion will include Night metropolis as well as a second, previously unnamed metropolis.
He described this as, “Chicago gone wrong” vibe,” and this new urban diverges from the neon-soaked, Blade Runner-esque aesthetic of Night City.
Pondsmith, who is less actively involved in the sequel but provides feedback on screenplays, cyberware, and environments, hinted at the city’s distinct atmosphere, calling it a fitting addition to the game.
He quickly backtracked, stating that he couldn’t say anything else, implying that the reveal was unintentional.

What makes the new city special?
Unlike Night City’s futuristic, corporate turmoil, the Chicago-inspired city promises a grittier, more distinct feel.
Pondsmith’s “Chicago gone wrong” comment implies a dystopian version of the Windy City, complete with failing infrastructure, gang-controlled streets, or a distinct cultural twist.
He showed faith in CD Projekt Red’s environment team, claiming that the city “works” for Project Orion’s goal.
This dual-city strategy might provide gamers with a variety of settings to explore, combining Night City’s high-tech sprawl with a new, darker urban scene.
Thoughts
I am pretty excited for the sequel to Cyberpunk. It is one of the best open-world FPS RPG games that I have played on PS5.
Despite its controversial launch, it was able to make a huge comeback with the 2.0 and Phantom Liberty updates and DLC.
CD Projekt Red is already working on Witcher 4 and I don’t see Project Orion releasing anytime before 2030. It would be better if the developers took more time and delivered a finished product on the launch.
